As I work through my Highpointing goal (to hike the highest point in each of the 50 states), my boys naturally want to come along… sometimes. If it’s too long, steep, hot, humid, buggy, or generally hard, they back away from the idea pretty quickly πΒ I was pretty similar as a child.
I am very glad they’re interested, and I look forward to when they’re a bit bigger and stronger (ages 6 and 9, currently) to do more than just a few miles without pooping out.
We haven’t done too many family hikes in the past few years, which got me thinking: When was our first family hike?
Note: I’m defining this as our first hike as a family of 4 (like we are now) but I’m sure we took some walks in the woods when G was an only child.
A quick search back through my photos revealed a hike at Hanging Rock State Park (first time there in June 2015), on Sunday August 30th, 2015.Β Less than 5 years ago, but my do things change!

We parked at the main parking lot, then did the easy yet worthwhile hike to Hidden Falls, which is a slight downhill for 0.4 miles, so less than 1 mile round trip. The trail itself is wide, and mostly flat and smooth. Easy to bring kids!
And I put the camera on timer to get the 4 of us:

I did some climbing, just for kicks:
Then we walked a little further down to the overlook:
We also headed down to the viewing platform for the Window Falls area, but I don’t seem to have any pictures of it, other than this one from Instagram:
And that was that… I don’t have any specific memories, but the family seemed to have a great time!
Asher had lots of pent up energy when we released him from the carrier and car seat later:

P.S. Upon further investigation, our first family hike was two weeks prior to Hanging Rock, on 8/16/2015, at Salem Lake, documented on Instagram:
Map view (to go all the way to Window FallsΒ is 0.6 miles one way)
